When I was a young girl, I got so mad over VICIOUS MAIDENS in school. Yes, you know what I’m talking about. Those girls that would purposefully slam you under the bus in order to jockey for some position they feel would satisfy their wretched soul. Yeah. I had that done to me more than once.
I went home and wrote hateful letters [which I never would have sent out] just to vent. I also wrote letters using swear words, as if I was expressing the same energy which was being dumped on me. And guess what?! My mom came into my room and read my letters. Not only was I grounded for them, but she made me promise not to express myself like that again.
As a mother now, I have a different point of view. I love my mom. But I know that her point of view and mine completely disagree on this one. And that’s okay. I see something different than she did/does. And it is just as valid. Now, I am not saying swearing is appropriate at all times and places… yet I AM SAYING that SWEARING IS APPROPRIATE when it is appropriate, WHICH IS SOMETHING THE HEART DECIDES.
Currently, I tell my H4, there is no swearing in the house; please do not swear in the presence of your elders and in public places. Please refrain from swearing as a form of assaulting another person or entity. Swearing is only appropriate to get your message across. Explore swearing there, and only there for now. When you are an adult, you can decide if swearing fits into your personal brand of YOU.
Yet, as for those letters when I was a young girl… letters of expressing my anger… well, here’s what I have to say about that to my own teens + friends:
Instead of letting anger eat away at us, let’s love and express our anger! Let’s vigorously write, scribble and swear in our journal. Let’s put to paper the portrait of our anger. If we are really angry, let’s start a dedicated anger journal and practice allowing our anger to move so we can process it.
Anger holds tremendous energy.
Anger is NOT WHO WE ARE!
DO NOT GET RID OF YOUR ANGER. That doesn’t work. You cannot get rid of any emotion. You must master it. You must be able to WORK WITH IT.
Emotions master us when they get us to become stagnant. When we begin to FEEL our emotions [really breathe with them], we begin to move the stuck and repressed energy. This is where the change can happen, and we begin to WORK WITH OUR EMOTIONS.
When Anger is expressed and moving, our PASSIONS can have ATTENTION + POWER to grow and be nurtured.
So give your anger voice, see it for what it is. Swear with your bad-self [not literally, you are a super star]… and SHINE ON!
